22.11.11 - Action Jackson Renews Motivation for GCSE Pupils

Motivational speaker, Action Jackson gave Hull's GCSE pupils an opportunity to realise their potential this month at the event, How to be a GCSE Champion, hosted by Hull Esteem Consortium.

The pupils, all currently preparing for their GCSEs at Malet Lambert School Language College, attended to hear Action Jackson, a motivational speaker and life coach who works with students, management teams and individuals, inform them of how they can reorganise their lives to get the most out of their time at school.

Hull Esteem Consortium is the organisation heading the Building Schools for the Future programme, which is investing £400m in developments for Hull schools. Esteem provide a base for everyone involved in the programme, and strive to remind those involved that pupils are at the heart of the developments.

To do this, the organisation runs The Exchange, a central hub for the city's pupils to learn about the developments surrounding them, and guide them through their education during this process of change.

The Exchange provides facilities to host events such as How to be a GCSE Champion, and provides the opportunities to work with those involved with education across the city. Business Champion and teacher at Malet Lambert, Stephen Logan, teamed up with The Exchange to organise the event.

Mr Logan said: "Sometimes the pupils need a change of environment to reawaken their awareness of the ability and potential they have. The Exchange provides a really dynamic space that created a huge buzz for everyone that day."

Feedback from the day was extremely positive, with 92% of pupils agreeing they felt the session had provided them with the inspiration needed to get through their GCSEs.

Luke Knott, a pupil from Malet Lambert School, said: "The motivational speakers were very helpful, they made me realise how much time I spend every day doing nothing useful. Now I know how to plan my weeks in order to get as much out of them as possible. It really showed me that I can do more, and want to do more, when revising for exams, exercising, or just enjoying life."

Other speakers on the day included Sam Whitaker, Hull Esteem's General Manager, John Buttrick from the Children's University, and Rachael Alexander, CEO of I Can Handle It. Speeches covered a range of topics, from time and stress management to raising self-confidence and realising the potential to achieve your dreams, including what Action Jackson calls, 'the psychology of success'.

Head of Esteem, Sam Whitaker, said: "Once pupils have an understanding of what may be stopping them succeed in their GCSEs, they can then focus on amending their lifestyles and the way they think to ensure they get the results they want to see.

"A lot of the pupils who attended the event saw a lack of free time to revise as a barrier to doing well in their exams. The speakers placed a large focus on organisation and showed pupils that some simple organisation and time management skills would provide a lot more free time than they thought they had."

Following the success of the event, Malet Lambert School is now looking at expanding the event in the future to include more year groups and higher numbers of pupils, with the possibility of extending further to include other schools in coming years.
