Project Timeline

Archbishop Sentamu Academy is a new kind of school for a new age, sponsored by the Church of England Diocese of York and dedicated to providing a 21st century learning environment that expands choices and opportunities for its students. The school is inclusive with a strong Christian ethos and welcomes students from all backgrounds, regardless of ability.

The new Archbishop Sentamu Academy on Preston Road was completed and opened on time. Now sitting alongside the Freedom Centre, it continues to specialise in Health Sciences and Business & Enterprise. Archbishop Sentamu is an eco-friendly school taking advantage of renewable and other 'green' technologies such as biomass generation for heating and harvesting rainwater for flushing toilets.

The new school is packed full of state-of-the-art computers and has a large focus on the high-tech facilities it offers to pupils.

Pre-construction: the first visit to the site reveals a number of hurdles to overcome before the construction can begin
Demolition: part of the preparation includes the demolition of houses on the site

Excavation: the first excavation on site begins as the substructure is prepared
Haul road: a new haul road is formed for construction vehicles to access the site
Piling: piling begins on site

Energy Centre: piling is completed on the energy centre, ready to be cut down
Temporary accommodation: the temporary accommodation arrives on site
Foundations: work continues on the foundations as the site nears the start of the framework installation

Main carpark: the site for the main car park is prepared
Structure: the first section of the steel structure rises from the foundations
Piling and steel structure: Piling continues, whilst the steel structure continues to take shape

Riser installation: risers are lifted into place by crane and installed throughout the structure
Stairs: stairs between the school's floors are installed
Steel structure: The structure rises higher as the uppermost steelwork is put in place

Roof steelwork completed: as the structure nears completion, the steelwork on the roof is completed
Excavation: excavation is underway for the playing fields and sports pitches
Foundations for vocational areas/sports hall; the foundations are laid

Screeding: screeding begins throughout the ground floor
Staircases: Staircase construction is completed

Roof: The roof structure makes good progress
Agora: The agora continues to take shape
Agora Roof: The roof of the agora starts to develop

Cladding: Cladding begins on the outside of Archbishop Sentamu Academy
Sports Pitches: The laying of the sports pitches is complete
Insulation/Partitions: Rooms begin to take shape as insulation and partitions are installed
